Ibrahima Konaté has delivered a significant update on his future at Liverpool , revealing he is “close to an agreement” on a new contract offering a major boost to the club ahead of a crucial summer rebuild.
The 26-year-old centre-back, whose current deal expires at the end of the season, spoke openly after Liverpool’s dramatic Merseyside derby win, suggesting that his long-term future at Anfield has never truly been in doubt.
“There are many things people have said but for a long time we have spoken with the club and we are close to an agreement,” Konaté stated.
“I think everyone wished for that as soon as possible but we are in a good way.”
Since arriving from RB Leipzig in 2021 for £35 million, Konaté has grown into one of Liverpool’s most reliable defensive figures.
Despite speculation surrounding his future, the French international made it clear that leaving the club was never part of his plan.

“For sure, there is a big chance that I’m here next season. This is what I’ve always wanted.”
His comments suggest that discussions with sporting director Richard Hughes have been ongoing for months, long before public speculation intensified.
Konaté even hinted that internal clarity existed behind the scenes, despite external noise:
“When everything is sorted, you will have to ask Richard what I said to him… he’s going to say something to make everyone quiet.”

The delay in finalising Konaté’s deal has raised eyebrows, but the defender pointed to similar situations involving senior figures like Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah in previous seasons.
According to Konaté, this could reflect a deliberate strategy by the club:
“It was exactly the same… maybe this is how the club want it.”
While unconventional, Liverpool’s approach appears to rely on patience and internal confidence rather than rushing negotiations something that may ultimately work in their favor again.

A Challenging Season On and Off the Pitch
Konaté’s 2025/26 campaign has not been straightforward. Beyond football, he has faced deep personal adversity following the passing of his father earlier this year.
Despite being granted compassionate leave, the defender chose to return early due to a defensive injury crisis within the squad highlighting his commitment to the club.
“It was a tough year because many things happened… if people knew, they would understand the sacrifices I’ve made for this club.”
This emotional backdrop adds further weight to his desire to remain at Anfield and continue his journey with the team.

Although Liverpool have fallen short of silverware this season, they remain on course for a top-four finish in the Premier League a minimum expectation for a club of their stature.
Still, Konaté was brutally honest about the standards at Liverpool:
“If we finish in the top four, we won’t be happy… we have to give our all next season to make something good.”
With negotiations nearing completion, Liverpool fans can be cautiously optimistic that Konaté will remain a cornerstone of the club’s defense heading into next season.
His blend of physical dominance, composure, and loyalty makes him a key figure in the team’s future especially as the club prepares for a potentially transformative summer under new leadership.
For now, Konaté’s message is clear: he’s not going anywhere unless something dramatic changes.
