Former Black Stars midfielder Kwadwo Asamoah has called for an end to the rising abuse of referees by fans during matches in Ghana, warning that such conduct is damaging the game and the development of young players.

Now serving as the Sports Director of SMAC Football Academy, Asamoah expressed concern over the behaviour of some supporters, stressing that intimidation of match officials undermines fair play and creates an unsafe environment.

Recalling a recent middle league fixture involving SMAC Football Academy in Teshie, he described a frightening incident where tensions escalated to the point that a security officer, a soldier, nearly cocked his weapon to disperse agitated fans.

Speaking exclusively to Citi Sports’ Godfred Akoto, Asamoah urged supporters to channel their passion positively and show respect for officials.

“During our game against NABS, they were not bad, but honestly, the referees were being intimidated and harassed. We got scared. One of the security men, a soldier, nearly cocked his gun, and it wasn’t a good experience, especially with kids around. I love when fans support their team, but harassing referees and officials is not healthy. As a country, this is something we have to bring an end to,” he said.

He added that while competition remains intense, discipline on and off the pitch is crucial, particularly at the developmental level where young players are still learning the values of the game.
