Black Stars legend and two-time African Cup of Nations (AFCON) winner, Rev. Osei Kofi, has waded into the debate over Ghana’s next head coach, warning against a return to foreign leadership and insisting the country’s success has always been driven by local expertise.

His comments follow the dismissal of Otto Addo after a run of four straight friendly defeats, with reports suggesting the Ghana Football Association (GFA) is considering a foreign replacement.

Speaking to Citi Sports, Rev. Osei Kofi pointed to history, arguing that Ghana’s four Africa Cup of Nations titles were all won under local coaches.

“These are the issues I keep raising. We don’t need to go down that path, we need continuity,” he said.

Foreign coach drama

He highlighted the legacy of C.K. Gyamfi, who led Ghana to AFCON glory in 1963 and 1965, and again played a key role in 1967 alongside Ben Coffie. Ghana’s last triumph in 1982, he noted, came under Osam Duodu and E.K. Afranie.

“No foreign coach has won a trophy with Ghana,” Osei Kofi stressed. “We need to do things properly in this country.”

Meanwhile, GFA President Kurt Okraku says a new head coach will be appointed within the next one to two weeks, as authorities move quickly to steady the team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
