Head coach for Coventry City, Frank Lampard, has admitted that there’s a lot of work to be done ahead of their return to the Premier League

Coventry City have completed one of English football’s most emotional comeback stories, sealing promotion to the Premier League for the 2026/27 season after a dramatic 1-1 draw against Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park.

The result confirmed their long-awaited return to the top flight, ending a 25-year exile and sparking celebrations among supporters. But while fans are dreaming, head coach Frank Lampard is already sounding the alarm.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Lampard made it clear that promotion is only the beginning, and survival will demand immediate action.

“There’s a lot of work to do for that because we know the step that it will be for the football club,” Lampard admitted.
“So that’s something we have to work on quickly now… we have to be ambitious. Coventry City Football Club, myself, staff, players everything.”

Despite the warning, Lampard acknowledged the importance of celebrating such a historic achievement.

“You want to go and enjoy the moment… in the next two weeks we can enjoy that,” he said.
“But of course we have to work behind the scenes to make sure that we go up the right way.”

It’s a delicate balance between emotion and preparation. Coventry’s fairytale return could quickly turn into a survival battle if planning doesn’t match ambition.

The celebrations won’t be small. Coventry is preparing a massive “WE ARE BACK: LIVE” festival alongside an open-top bus parade scheduled for May 4, 2026.

The city council is also set to recommend the club be awarded the prestigious Freedom of the City, an honour reserved for landmark achievements.

But even as the city prepares to celebrate, Lampard’s focus remains fixed on the bigger picture: building a squad capable of competing, not just participating.

With five games still left to play this season, the real work has already begun behind closed doors. Recruitment, squad depth, tactical upgrades, everything will be under review.

The Premier League is unforgiving. Newly promoted teams often struggle to cope with the intensity, quality, and financial disparity.

Lampard knows this. That’s why his tone is less celebratory and more strategic.
