East Airport International School (EAIS) and The Roman Ridge School (TRRS) emerged champions of the 2026 International Schools Sports Association of Ghana (ISSAG) Basketball Championships after impressive performances on Saturday, January 31.
EAIS claimed their first-ever ISSAG boys’ basketball title with a controlled 24–17 victory over SOS-Hermann Gmeiner International College (SOS-HGIC) in the final. The eventual champions dictated the tempo from start to finish to cap a memorable tournament run.
The title charge was inspired by tournament Most Valuable Player, Star Poku-Asante, whose influence was felt throughout the competition. He combined effectively with twin brother Sunny Poku-Asante and Keifa Agyeman Badu as EAIS brushed past Angels Specialist School International in the quarter-finals before defeating Ghana Christian International High School (GCIHS) in the semi-finals.
Earlier in the boys’ competition, GCIHS secured the bronze medal after edging The Roman Ridge School 20–18 in a tightly contested third-place playoff.
In the girls’ division, The Roman Ridge School delivered a dominant showing to lift the championship, overpowering Akosombo International School (AIS) 19–2 in the final. The victory was driven by an outstanding performance from Petra Adjei Kumi, who was later named Girls’ Division MVP.
TRRS set the tone early in the tournament with a commanding 30–0 quarter-final win over International Community School before dispatching GCIHS 11–6 in the semi-finals.
Speaking after the final, TRRS captain Adjei Kumi attributed the team’s success to mental strength and belief.
“We are going to win the tournament. When you play in ISSAG, for our team it’s all about the mental strength,” she said. “We’ve come in with a new mindset and a new team approach for everyone to see what a real basketball team is.”
In the girls’ third-place playoff, GCIHS claimed bronze following a 17–5 win over Alpha-Beta Educational Center (ABEC).
The championship followed last week’s zonal qualifiers, where the top two teams from each of the four zones advanced to the finals. The ISSAG continues to serve as the governing sports body for schools running international curricula in Ghana, promoting competitive school sports across multiple disciplines.
