Kobbie Mainoo delivered the defining moment of his young career, scoring the decisive goal as Manchester United beat Liverpool FC 3-2, before declaring: “I used to dream of times like this.”
The 77th-minute strike at Old Trafford not only secured victory in one of football’s fiercest rivalries but completed a remarkable personal turnaround for the midfielder, who has gone from limited opportunities earlier in the season to becoming a central figure in United’s resurgence.
The goal also capped a landmark week. Just days earlier, on 30 April 2026, the club confirmed Mainoo had signed a new five-year contract, tying him to United until June 2031 and underlining their long-term faith in his development.

Speaking after the match, Mainoo reflected on both his goal and his renewed commitment to the club.
” I used to dream of times like this, He ( my younger self ) would have been over the moon and with a new contract as well? Yes, 100%. I’m glad to be here and commit my future to the club.”
His contribution proved decisive in a match that ultimately secured United’s place in next season’s UEFA Champions League. The result guarantees a top-five finish and signals a significant shift in fortunes for a club that had faced uncertainty earlier in the campaign.

Yet for Mainoo, the achievement is only part of a bigger ambition.
“Yes, 100%. To be able to turn it around the way we have done, it’s a credit to all the players and the manager as well. We’re just looking forward and we still need to finish the season strongly.
It’s not enough for us, we just want to keep on winning, winning, winning”
That mentality reflects a wider transformation within the squad under head coach Michael Carrick, whose arrival has coincided with a renewed sense of belief. Mainoo highlighted the manager’s influence, particularly after a difficult spell under former coach Ruben Amorim, when his playing time was limited.

” It was difficult of course, any time you’re not playing football. I just try to look forward as much as possible and keep working hard, keep my head down and get these things from it.
His belief in you was just oozing through. Yes, he’s played a huge part in it. The confidence that he puts in, not just me but all the players.
You want to follow him, you want to fight for him, you want to die for him on the pitch. I feel like that’s what we’ve shown today.”
United’s win also ensured a rare league double over Liverpool, having beaten their rivals earlier in the season. The result highlights a broader resurgence under Carrick, with the team showing improved consistency and belief in recent months.

Qualification for the Champions League brings additional rewards, including a financial boost of £15.7 million after a year without European football. For a club rebuilding its competitive edge, both on and off the pitch, the significance of that achievement is considerable.
For Mainoo, however, the focus remains on continued progress. His match-winning contribution against Liverpool, combined with his long-term commitment, signals a player stepping into a central role at one of the world’s biggest clubs.
