Pep Guardiola has rejected the opportunity to become Italy’s next head coach, opting instead to stick with his plan to take a break from football following his departure from Manchester City.

The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) had made an ambitious move for the Spaniard after confirming earlier this week that talks had taken place. FIGC president Giovanni Malago even suggested exceptions could be made to accommodate Guardiola’s salary demands.

Italy’s technical director Paolo Maldini revealed on Thursday that the federation initially approached Carlo Ancelotti for the role.

However, the veteran manager has chosen to remain in charge of Brazil, prompting Italy to intensify efforts to land Guardiola.

The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss was reportedly offered the freedom to shape the national team project as he saw fit, in addition to a lucrative financial package, as Italy sought to convince one of football’s most decorated managers to lead a revival.

Despite taking time to consider the proposal, Guardiola has declined the offer, choosing instead to honour his plans to rest, spend time with his family and travel after a decade in charge of Manchester City.

Italy are searching for a new direction after failing to qualify for three consecutive FIFA World Cups.

With Guardiola out of the running, former Italy midfielder Andrea Pirlo has emerged as the leading candidate for the position.

Pirlo, who is currently in charge of Dubai-based United FC, is expected to be considered for the role as the Azzurri prepare for a UEFA Nations League campaign against France, Belgium and Turkey before turning their attention to qualifying for Euro 2028.
