Sam Johnson: “Football in Ghana should resume quickly”

Former Black Stars international, Sam Johnson, is calling for a quick return of footballing activities in the country in order to help footballers make some money.

The freeze on all football activities has been the strongest fallout from the Anas Aremeyaw Anas documentary on corruption in football in the country.

The Ghana FA has been hit with an injunction while Kwesi Nytantakyi is facing criminal charges and is under investigations.

In addition, Mr. Nyantakyi has resigned from his positions at the Ghana FA and CAF and has been suspended for 90 days by FIFA over the tape. He was holding a position as a FIFA Council member as of then.

Johnson shared his thoughts to Daniel Oduro of Ghanaweb in an interview on Monday.

“The mess in Ghana football was supposed to have been cleaned up years ago. The cleaning of the local game is good but it has to be quick.

This should be the case so that the many footballers who have taken football up as a career will not go hungry. How much do these guys even earn when there is football?

We are talking about 400 or 500 cedis and that is not enough. Imagine their situation now that there is not football.

I am happy that reforms are being thought of but things have to be quick. If someone does the wrong thing, he must be made to face the law.”

After the documentary was aired, the government went to court to get an injunction against the Ghana FA and its activities while the way forward was being thought of.

Currently, a liaison team headed by Dr. Kofi Amoah, has been put together following government’s deliberations with CAF and FIFA, to ensure Ghana’s national teams get to participate in the international competitions they have qualified for.

Government has also gained an injunction against the FA and the next step seems to be the dissolution of the FA to make way for changes in its management and reforms in running Ghanaian football.
