Minister of Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, has touted the sporting infrastructural prowess of Ghana in the West African sub region in the face of hosting the African Games.
He said this in his speech delivered at the opening ceremony of the 13th African Games at the University of Ghana Stadium Stadium in Legon.
President of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo, Chairperson of the African Union Commission and Moussa Faki Mahamat headlined dignitaries who attended the ceremony.
Ghana is hosting the multi-sport competition for the first time despite its crucial role via the nation’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, in setting up the competition.
The renovated University of Ghana Stadium and the newly built Borteyman Sports Complex will serve as the main host venues for the event that runs from March 8 to March 23 and according to Honourable Ussif, these facilities are the finest in the West African sub region.
“Today, thanks to the 13th African Games, courtesy His Excellency Nana Akufo-Addo, Ghana can boast of the finest multi sporting discipline facilities in the sub region”
“These facilities will continue to be useful not only to Ghana but to the entire sub region for training and competition purpose. We are privileged and ready to deliver unforgettable Games to Africa and the rest of the world.”
Seven disciplines in the competition will serve as qualifiers to the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris including cycling, tennis and athletics.
