Head coach of Ghana’s National Women’s Hockey Team, Osei Boakye-Yiadom, says players with experience from competing at the Commonwealth Games were key to the team’s gold medal winning feat at the 13th African Games.
He said this in an exclusive interview with Citi Sports after Ghana won gold in the women’s division of the competition that was played out at the Theodosia Okoh Hockey Stadium in Accra.
Ghana made it to the final in the men’s and women’s division but won silver in the men’s division with a loss to Egypt while the female side beat Nigeria to the gold medal on penalties.
Speaking on the win, coach Boakye-Yiadom talked about how difficult the challenge was beating Nigeria but attributed the team’s gold medal winning feat majorly to experience. (Click highlighted text to read full story)
“Our aim was to get to the final and pass (the test). We had played in two Commonwealth Games in Australia (Melbourne in 2018) and in the UK (Birmingham in 2022) so there were a lot of experienced players. We had about seven of them in the team so it really helped us.”
The team’s gold medal was one of Ghana’s seven gold medals bagged on the penultimate day of the 13TH African Games.
