The Forum for Accountable Governance has petitioned the Office of Special Prosecution (OSP) to investigate expenditure made in the 2023 African Games.
Ghana hosted the 2023 African Games from March 8 to March 23 with the multi-sport event attracting over 3,500 athletes and the competition was mainly held at the refurbished University of Ghana Stadium and the newly built Borteyman Sports Complex.
However, in the aftermath of the Games, several controversies have emerged including failure to fully pay hotels that accommodated officials during the competition with the latest controversy being a purported $3.6 million payment to the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) to cover the 13th African Games. After officially submitting the petition, Convener of the Forum for Accountable Governance, Kwame Owusu Danso, a legal practitioner, shed more light on the rationale behind petitioning the OSP to investigate the African Games expenditure.

“Our mission here is very simple. We came to the OSP to open an investigation into what went into the $245 million for the purposes of organizing the 13th African Games. So the content (of the petition) is to invite the OSP to open an investigation into what went into the expenditure particularly because we suspect that there are some companies that are close to persons who are politically exposed or companies that belong to persons who are politically exposed.”

“We have noticed that there are some procurement breaches in the selection of the persons who were given the jobs to organize first of all the African Games and also in selecting the companies for the broadcasting of the event and the food and etc. So that is why we came today to invite the office to investigate into what went into the $245 million that was used for the purposes of organizing the African Games.”
