Epiphany Warriors FC celebrated their first-ever victory in the Women’s Premier League with a 2-0 triumph over Faith Ladies on a sunny Saturday afternoon at the Adjiringanor Astroturf in their opening match of the 2024/25 Malta Guinness Women’s Premier League season.
Both teams entered the match with high expectations, but it was Epiphany Warriors who ultimately left a strong impression on the enthusiastic home crowd with their commanding win.
As the game began, the Warriors displayed a mixture of grit and skill. The first half saw both sides create opportunities, but neither could break the deadlock. Faith Ladies came close when forward Julian Fafali missed a chance with a misdirected shot, while the Warriors’ striker Diana Abuu forced a save from Faith Ladies goalkeeper Annabel Bansah.
The deadlock was finally broken just after the break. Two minutes into the second half, Beline Nyarko found herself in the right place at the right time after a deflected shot came her way. Nyarko unleashed a stunning curler that sailed past the Faith Ladies’ defense and into the net, marking Epiphany Warriors’ first-ever Premier League goal.
With momentum on their side, Epiphany Warriors kept up the pressure, and Faith Ladies struggled to regain control. Eight minutes later, in the 55th minute, substitute midfielder Grace Appiah Asamoah doubled the Warriors’ lead. After a slick team move involving nearly 20 consecutive passes, Asamoah struck from the edge of the box, sending the ball beyond Bansah’s reach.
Despite Faith Ladies’ best efforts to mount a comeback, Epiphany Warriors’ defence stood firm, bolstered by the energy of their supporters. The team’s confident performance highlighted their potential for the season ahead.
As the final whistle sounded, players and fans celebrated a historic moment, with Epiphany Warriors securing their first win in the top division. This victory was more than just three points; it signalled the team’s ability to compete at the highest level while entertaining their fans with exciting football.
With this momentous first match behind them, the Warriors are eager to build on their success as they prepare to face fellow newcomers Halifax Queens in their next match.
Unlike Epiphany Warriors, Halifax Queens started their season with a narrow 1-0 defeat to Jonina Ladies on the road.
