Liverpool manager Arne Slot says opponents are deliberately slowing down matches to frustrate his team — a tactic he believes is hurting the Reds’ performance this season.

Liverpool currently sit sixth in the Premier League, a surprising position for the defending champions. The club has recorded 11 wins, six draws and seven defeats in 24 matches, highlighting an inconsistent 2025/26 campaign compared to last year’s title triumph.

Speaking on the club’s official YouTube channel, Slot admitted the season has been filled with setbacks but insists his players are still pushing to regain their rhythm and confidence.

Reflecting on missed opportunities and the psychological challenge of defending a title

“we’ve had quite a few of setbacks this season… the only thing you want again is winning the league and you’re not happy with competing for the second third or fourth position, but still there’s a lot to play for…”

Slot explained that Liverpool traditionally win games through quality and intensity, but maintaining that tempo has become increasingly difficult as rivals adjust their tactics.

He added that he understands why teams choose to reduce the pace of games against Liverpool, even if it goes against the league’s entertaining image.

“I can completely understand that the other team uses these tactics against teams like us… But the question is if that is the right thing for the Premier League to be the brand they want to be.”

Despite the challenges, Slot remains optimistic that Liverpool can still turn things around. With several matches left in the season, the Reds will be hoping to rediscover the fast-paced style that brought them success and keep their campaign alive.
