Senegal legend Sadio Mané has announced his retirement from international football, bringing the curtain down on a remarkable 14-year career with the Lions of Teranga.
The 34-year-old confirmed his decision in a statement published by Le Quotidien on Friday, just days after Senegal’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign ended with a 3-2 extra-time defeat to Belgium in the Round of 32.
Mané leaves the national team as one of the greatest players in Senegalese football history, having earned 130 caps since making his debut in 2012.
The former Liverpool forward played a pivotal role in Senegal’s greatest football achievement by helping the country win the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations after finishing runners-up in 2019.
Although he has retired from international football, Mané is expected to continue his club career with Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr, where he remains under contract until 2027.
Emotional farewell
In his farewell message, the former Senegal captain thanked supporters for their unwavering backing throughout his international journey.

“Know that I sacrificed everything for this flag. I gave my all and always fought fiercely for our country.”
He also acknowledged the role fans played in his success.
“Your constant support has been the driving force behind my success.”
Not leaving Senegal football
Despite stepping away from international duty, Mané revealed he intends to remain involved in Senegalese football in a different capacity.
The two-time African Footballer of the Year said he is willing to contribute his experience to the national team or football administration in the future.
“Tomorrow, I will gladly put my experience at the service of the Nation, whether within a technical staff, on the coaching bench, or in the governing bodies.”
Mané’s retirement marks the end of an era for Senegal, with the AFCON-winning captain leaving behind a legacy built on leadership, commitment and unforgettable performances for the Lions of Teranga.
