Local players can thrive on World Cup stage if given chance — Port City coach

Port City head coach Abdallah Brimah has joined growing calls for greater inclusion of home-based players in the Black Stars ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

His comments follow an ongoing debate sparked on Channel One TV’s World Cup Central, where pundits have been weighing the idea of a quota system to create opportunities for Ghana Premier League players.

Black Stars players celebrating

Speaking to Citi Sports on Saturday, April 26, 2026, Brimah acknowledged that player selection ultimately rests on a coach’s philosophy and tactical needs.

However, he stressed that the Ghana Premier League is rich in talent capable of competing at the highest level.

“Every coach has his own philosophy and the type of players he wants. You may see a local player and be surprised by how well he fits into a system and earns a call-up,” he said.

“I believe some of our local players are very, very good. They have what it takes to play at the World Cup. Sometimes, we set such high standards that we overlook them and assume they cannot deliver.”

Brimah also pointed out that many foreign-based Black Stars players were once given opportunities to develop and prove themselves, insisting local players deserve the same pathway.

“Those playing abroad were once given a chance. If local players are also given that opportunity, they can make it. I have confidence in that, but it depends on how the coach structures things.”

“I strongly believe that when local players are given the chance, they can excel,” he added.

Meanwhile, Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has assured that players in the Ghana Premier League and other domestic competitions will be given fair opportunities, with selection based largely on performance.
