Black Stars head coach Chris Hughton believes player commitment to the AFCON should be viewed on a case by case basis.

He said this in an interview with UK media outlet Talk Sport as Ghana prepares to compete in the 2023 AFCON in Cote D’Ivoire. The AFCON is held in January and February at a time most top leagues particularly in Europe are actively competing.

Hughton’s appearance came at a time the provisional squad for the Black Stars 20223 AFCON was released with a trio of players with questionable fitness named in the group. (Click highlighted text to read full story)

“Forget about the AFCON, we’ve always known players that played at the national level that will be there whatever it takes; they are 50% injured but they are going to turn up at the national level but there are other players that won’t.”

“There are other players who would perhaps see it differently so I think that this one is always going to be personal. I think this is minimal…these are individual cases and I think the large majority are of players wanting to represent their country

Hughton is expected to trim the squad to 27 by January 3 for next year’s AFCON that has Ghana, Egypt Cape Verde and Mozambique drawn in Group B.
