Head coach of Cameroon’s National Men’s Football Team, Marc Brys, has slammed Liverpool striker Hugo Ekitike’s hesitance to play for the African nation over France.
He made his stance clear after Ekitike wasn’t named in France’s squad for upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Iceland and Ukraine on September 9 and 5 respectively.
Despite scoring three goals in three games in all competitions after sealing a move to Liverpool, the 23 year old wasn’t called to Didier Deschamps’ team.
The 6 foot 3 inch forward was born in France to a Cameroonian father and a French mother and is eligible to play for the African nation but is showing signs of hesitation picking Cameroon over France and Marc Brys isn’t impressed.
“I haven’t contacted him. He put all his money into trying to play for France and he didn’t succeed. And now we, Cameroon, are his second choice?”

“I don’t need to be a second choice. He’s a good player, that’s not the issue. In the situation I described, he doesn’t deserve to come here” he said and added that

He needed “good players who play with heart” and not “a star who thinks he can come to this country or another” according to Foot Mercato.
