None of us feels bigger than our gifted Under 23 teammates- Ernest Nuamah states

Black Meteors forward Ernest Nuamah has countered suggestions about some players of the team “feeling bigger” than others in a statement.

His statement comes in the wake of Ghana’s National Under 23 Men’s National Football Team’s poor campaign at the 2023 Under 23 AFCON tournament.

The Meteors got kicked out of the tournament at the group stage after losing 5-1 to Morocco, drawing 1-1 with Guinea and beating Congo 3-2.

Ghana has missed out on qualifying to the Olympic Games since 2004 and that streak continues after the Black Meteors failed to qualify to the Paris Olympic Games next year.

After crashing out of the tournament, football legend Asamoah Gyan alluded to selfish traits by some Meteors players as the reason behind the team’s disappointing tournament. (Click highlighted text to read story)

Nuamah scored in the win over Congo but was hampered by an injury that limited his involvement in the must win game against Guinea.

Speaking on the tournament, the FC Nordsjaelland player stated, “I’ll take this opportunity to clear unfounded stories of…any of us feeling bigger than our gifted U 23 mates. No excuses but our performances as a group was below expectations but personally I could do better. As a group if we ever have the opportunity again, Ghana deserves better.”

Nuamah scored 15 goals and added four assists in 34 games in all competitions last season for Nordsjaelland and his fine form was rewarded with a debut call up to the Black Stars.

He went on to make his Black Stars debut in a 2023 AFCON qualifier against Madagascar in a goalless draw; the 19 year old was one of the few bright spots in the team.
